Jewish Tradition

Shalom School fosters in its students a profound commitment to Jewish tradition and Jewish life. Our purpose is to guide students into a way of life steeped in Jewish values and practices, while recognizing legitimacy of diversity in the Jewish community.

Shalom School approaches the teaching of Jewish texts, observances, and values with reverence for our tradition and respect for intellectual inquiry. We view the Hebrew language as an essential key to Jewish culture, religion, and history. Therefore, the study of traditional texts in their original language is essential for a mature understanding of Jewish life.

We also seek to sustain and make more widespread the use of Hebrew as the normative Jewish language. As a result, both classical and modern Hebrew is essential elements of the curriculum. The primary goal is that vocabulary, reading, and writing skills will be developed around specific content with the goal of conveying knowledge about that content. In this regard, fluency in Hebrew as a second language is to be viewed as a beneficial by-product of Shalom School’s program. Of primary concern is the development of Jewish practices and values so that the children’s lives can be guided by the ethical and moral teachings of our tradition. To that end,

Shalom School seeks to foster observances that build on levels provided in the home. Observances are introduced naturally and without compulsion. Shalom School will provide experiences that will enable the children to develop a positive sense of Jewish identity through interaction with staff, fellow students, and parents, thereby helping to develop a sense of effective relationship among school, home, congregation, and the community.

Shalom School seeks to create an awareness of the Jewish People and to generate a sense of the importance of the State of Israel. While emphasizing ties with the world Jewish community and with Israel, Shalom School seeks to develop an attitude of love and concern for our country and respect toward other, differing approaches to religious expression within the Jewish People and with other faiths.
