Throughout 5th grade, students will increase their facility with the four basic arithmetic operations applied to fractions, decimals, percents, and positive and negative numbers. They will also learn how to use common measuring units to determine length, perimeter, and area of polygons. They will also explore how to use formulas to determine the volume of geometric figures. Students will know the concept of angle measurement and use a protractor and compass to solve problems. They will use grids, tables, graphs, and charts to record and analyze data.
SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE
The Social Studies and Science curriculum is supported with project based learning activities and simulation units. For example, the students go to "medical" school, train to become a specialist, and treat "patients" in clinics as a way to learn about the human body and its systems. For the unit on Colonialism, the students prepare to set sail for the New World and they establish "colonies" within the classroom.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION PROGRAM
The outdoor education program takes place in the spring and is a 4 day, 3 night trip. We attend Web of Life Field School located outside of Santa Cruz, CA. The WOLF school program focuses on hands-on science education in the outdoors! It is a Standards-based exploration of scientific concepts and natural history through field study, group initiatives, fun songs, active games and living together in a community. These seven concepts form the basis of the academic program: Energy, Cycles, Adaptations, Communities, Diversity, Change, and Interdependence. These concepts give students a framework for exploring the natural world and function as an organizing principle for the Science Standards’ individual teaching requirements.
