Sixth Grade

Welcome to Sixth Grade!

LANGUAGE ARTS

We spend many hours each day teaching students English, Social Studies and many other subjects. Yet, sometimes we do not spend enough time teaching students how to study. These skills do not come naturally and they must be taught. Mastering and continually using good skills in school and at home will give your child the edge to achieve success in school and the future.

Parents can help their children master many of these skills and I will be asking for your support and assistance this year while we work on developing and building these skills. To keep you informed of ways that you can help, I will be sending home worksheets or other materials that I would like you to read, sign and return to school. This will reinforce a very basic and important skill that many students have trouble with - putting a paper in their notebook, taking it home and completing it (with parent signature) and returning it in good condition on the date it is due. The following study skills are to be targeted with this program:

  • Organizing a notebook and staying organized
  • Keeping a planner
  • Setting up a home study environment
  • Doing homework
  • Management of time at school and at home
  • Setting goals, establishing priorities, and meeting those goals
  • Developing classroom behaviors
  •  Note taking and reading in the content areas
  • Preparation and test taking skills

This year, we will also be reading four novels. Before each novel, you can expect a Novel Overview sheet. This sheet will tell explain the assignments for the novel and the due dates.

AUTHOR STUDY

Students will research the life and works of a favorite author. They will be required to create a display board for the author, which will focus on a biography of the author, a list of other books by the author, and a summary, evaluation and visual for each book.

GEOGRAPHY

The geography unit consists of a role-playing simulation, which helps students improve their knowledge of world geography. It is designed to reinforce students' basic geography skills while they travel around the world on a treasure quest as a member of a "caravan." They also use and refine group decision-making skills as they encounter obstacles and opportunities while journeying to cities throughout the world.
